| 2 sets of 60s live work from Bill Evans -- both from overseas! The first half features songs from Evans' 1969 performance at the Pescara Jazz Festival in Italy -- material that was recorded for radio, with great sound quality! The wonderfully laidback and lyrical set features bass work by Eddie Gomez and drums by Marty Morrell -- on 4 tracks that include "How My Heart Sings", "Time Remembered", "12 Tones Tune", and "Waltz For Debby". The second half is from a few years earlier -- recorded in Paris in 1965, with a wonderful trio that features Chuck Israels on bass and Larry Bunker on drums! Evans has a strength on the keys that's really wonderful -- possibly a bit more force than on some of his later live European sides, but always with an ear for some of the most sensitive tones on the piano -- bright and blue colors that make each new tune a tiny little painting in sound. Given the setting, the recording quality is quite well -- a bit dimmed with age, but better than the usual non-label Evans live set. Titles include "Nardis", "Stella By Starlight", "Round Midnight", and "Someday My Prince Will Come". (Image shown is from LP, CD cover differs slightly.) |
