| Two slices of live work by Stan Getz -- both pretty darn great! The first half of the album features Getz blowing with a relatively modern group -- Steve Kuhn on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums -- a really magical quartet that open up with a sense of flow that Stan was only just beginning to show in his music at this point -- almost a Sweet Rain sort of mode, but done live here in 1961 many years before that album! Tracks by this group include "Where Do You Go", "Airegin", and "Baubles Bangles & Beads". The second half features a 1966 performance from Berlin -- again relatively creative and with modern overtones -- thanks to a group that includes Gary Burton on vibes, Chuck Israels on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums. The Burton/Getz combination is as winning here as it is on any of their few other recordings together -- and titles include "O Grande Amor", "Blues Walk", "On Green Dolphin Street", and "The Shadow Of Your Smile". (Image shown is LP image, CD cover differs slightly.) |
