| It is very rare that a new musical project comes along and blows you out of the water. It is fortunate, then, that this happens to be one of those rare occasions. In a similar conceptual vein to the experimental brains of Matthew Herbert, Squarepusher & Murcof comes Gabriel Prokofiev and The Elysian Quartet. Gabriel Prokofiev, whose background compromises both dance music (working under various aliases for the last 6 years) and a classical training (+his grandfather is Sergei Prokofiev, who composed Peter And The Wolf amongst many other celebrated works), has taken a brave and innovative step with this project which witnesses the traditional format of the classical string quartet go head to head with experimental electronica, in both the quartet's original composition and the featured remixes. This album oozes with individuality, arousal, originality and open-minded adventure -- but most of all it is a merging of disparate genres that has ventured into a new territory and created something exotic and sublime. The Elysian Quartet are probably the most exhilarating young string quartet of today, The Elysian Quartet compromises Emma Smith, Jenny May Logan,Vince Sipprell and Laura Moody: four highly skilled and distinctive musicians in their early-20s whose trademark is their uninhibited enthusiasm for all kinds of music. With its energetic and fresh sound, The Elysian Quartet puts its own stamp on a wide classical repertoire while chartering new territory for a classical ensemble. |
