| The Jubilee Shows were a unique series of radio entertainment designed for the men and women enlisted in the U.S. Armed Forces during W.W. II. None of the broadcasts were sent over the regular networks in the U.S., but to specific radio stations all over the world. The music here has been transfered directly from the original 16” Vinylite discs. The Armed Forces Jubilee shows provide a goldmine of rare, well-recorded broadcast sessions with the top bands of the 40’s in the U.S. The Count Basie Orchestra was at absolute full strength on this session, with the introduction of Joe Newman on trumpet and the return of the legendary Lester Young on tenor sax. The Teddy Wilson Sextet is also in fine form here, not least of all thanks to the incendiary presence of clarinetist Edmond Hall. Next follows a session with the lesser-known, yet fine and swinging big-band led by trumpeter and vocalist Bobby Sherwood, augmented here on some tracks by the smooth vocals of The Modernaires. |
