| A beautiful recent album from one of the key talents in Finnish jazz over the past few decades -- pianist Heikki Sarmanto, who's working here with a great deal of creativity and imagination! Although contemporary, the set feels like some lost bit of modern work from the 60s -- never too outside, but with some nicely sharp edges at times -- and a great sense of tonal color and timing from Heikki's work on the keys. Tenorist Juhani Aaltonen brings in some nicely soulful moments on tenor, and the rest of the quartet includes Pekka Sarmanto on bass and Craig Herndon on drums. Titles include "Moonflower", "At The Fountain", "Madame Chaloff", "Wolf", "African Echoes", and "Jai Guru Dev". |
