| Two rare ABC albums from trombonist Urbie Green -- back to back on one CD! First up is the quintet session Blues & Other Shades Of Green -- one of the most obscure small group dates by Green -- a heck of a great player who was too often lost amidst larger ensembles! The album's got Urbie playing both slide and valve trombone, in a quintet that includes Jimmy Raney on guitar, Dave McKenna on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums -- and the tracks have a tightly arranged approach, but also still allow plenty of room for the individual instrumentalists to express themselves. Titles include "Reminiscent Blues", "One For Dee", "Am I Blue", "Dirty Dan", "Warm Valley", "Paradise", and "It's Too Late Now". All About Urbie Green is a large group date recorded for ABC a year later -- one that show's Urbie's fluid talents amidst a bigger ensemble, soaring alongside a few other trombones! The album features work from three different dates -- and players include Chauncey Walsh, Jack Satterfield, Lou McGarity, and Rex Peer on trombones; Joe Wilder, John Carisi, and Nick Travis on trumpets; Al Cohn and Ray Beckenstein on tenor, Hal McKusick on alto, and Dave McKenna on piano. And although the settings are large, Urbie's still the main soloist on most numbers -- thanks to some well-penned arrangements from John Carisi! Titles include "Springsville", "Plain Bill From Bluesville", "Little John", "Stella By Starlight", "Soft Winds", and "Home". |
