Dino Saluzzi's latest is simply one of the most beautiful recordings I've heard in some time. I've always found his bandoneon playing both magnetic and hypnotic - he weaves a mighty spell. On this recording, he's joined by his son José Maria Saluzzi on acoustic guitar and ECM stalwart Palle Danielsson on double bass. As one would expect on an ECM release, there are no overdubs here - just three stellar musicians completely in tune with each other, laying out beauty for the listener. All of the compositions are originals by Dino - and while none of them are strictly tangos, you can definitely hear the tango in his soul. It's where his roots lie, and its power and beauty infuse everything he's written.
There is great beauty and depth here, warmth and life and joy and aching sadness - all of the things that make up life.
