The SJO keeps alive the spirit of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra whose current incarnation the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra still plays in New York with Dick Oatts as artistic director. On these live recordings, selected from three shows at the Stocholm band’s natural homeground, Jazzclub Fasching, Oatts leads the saxophone section which also includes guest Gary Smulyan. All compositions and arrangements by Thad Jones except for the Jim McNeely composition “Off the Cuff”.
