As the title implies, the tunes are all originals by Ornette Coleman -- performed here by a quartet that includes Aldo Romano on drums, Franco D'Andrea on piano, Furio Di Castri on bass, and Paolo Fresu on trumpet and keyboards! Given the time, the players, and the slight bit of electricity in the instrumentation, the overall sound isn't as straightly Coleman-esque as you might expect -- but that's a good thing too, as Romano's conception of the compositions is more in the mode of the post-Ornette work undertaken by old partners Don Cherry or Charlie Haden -- as fascinated with the sound and shapes of the tunes as it is the original Coleman rhythmic progression. Titles include "Check Up", "Half Way", "Lorraine", "The Blessing", "Jayne", "Feet Music", and "Tears Inside". |
