The titles on this release come from a golden era for Dolphy. He was certainly playing superbly in 1960/1 and, if one was to select the 1964Out To Lunch with Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Richard Davis and Anthony Williams as his finest date as a leader, it would only be confirming the tremendous ground work that was put in during these years.
Nevertheless, many observers would still maintain that the best records of his final years were made in the company of Mingus, who features on this disc as well as Booker Little, Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, Coleman Hawkins and Tommy Flanagan. |
