Engineered by noted hip-hop and rock producer Scotty Hard (Medeski Martin & Wood, Björk, Wu-Tang Clan). Pi Recordings previously released Fieldwork’s acclaimed 2002 debut Your Life Flashes and the widely praised follow-up Simulated Progress. Door is being released simultaneously with the new Vijay Iyer Quartet CD on Sunnyside Records. There will be a coordinated publicity push for the two CDs. Previous Vijay Iyer release has shipped +5,000 units. Tyshawn Sorey’s debut CD That/Not has received glowing praise and has been widely cited on critics’ year-end lists. Door will be his second release as a leader.
Praised on NPR’s Fresh Air as “a jazz power trio for the new century,” Fieldwork makes its most powerful and fiercely imagined statement to date with Door, the group’s third album for Pi Recordings. An important marker in this New York collective’s ongoing evolution, Door documents three years of intense collaboration and is the first Fieldwork recording to feature the jaw-dropping contributions of Tyshawn Sorey, drummer, composer, and co-leader of Fieldwork since 2005. Rounded out by saxophonist/composer Steve Lehman and pianist/composer Vijay Iyer, Fieldwork reflects and refracts the American jazz tradition, modern composition, African and South Asian music, underground hip-hop and electronica, and the influential music of Chicago’s AACM.
“Vijay Iyer’s arrangements range over a broad swath of improvisational and textural ground, flirting with hip-hop, ambient drone, and jazz noir.” — Pitchfork
“Pianist-composer Vijay Iyer amplifies that tangle of anger, pain, and motion with a spinning-wheel score.” —Rolling Stone
