| The masterful bandleader of a legendary orchestra, a first-class composer, a superb arranger, a restless artist by nature and a musician who never stopped recording from 1926 on, the incomparable Duke Ellington stands in a class of his own and remains as one of the men who defined the shape of jazz and American music throughout most of the Twentieth Century.
This DVD compiles different short and medium-length films starring the great Duke Ellington and his orchestra:
Black and Tan: in which he plays a duet with Arthur Whetsol.
A Bundle of Blues: highlighted by a lengthy rendition of 'Stormy Weather' with Ivie Anderson.
Symphony in Black: which depicts four aspects of 1930s African-American life, with the first appearance of then-unknown singer Billie Holiday
The Hit Parade: we see one of Ellington's most lively and amusing screen performances
Paramount Pictorial: fascinating not only for the music and glimpses of Ellington directing his band, but also because of the explanation of how a record in the 1930s was recorded and duplicated
RKO Jamboree Number 7: a mini-concert of great Ellington standards with brilliant soloes by Ben Webster and Johnny Hodges
Also included are assorted different musical sequences from other motion pictures: the Amos ‘n’ Andy 'Cheek and Double Cheek,' making the first black big band with a credited appearance in a white feature film (with a full-length version of ‘Old Man Blues’), the three scenes starring Mae West in 'Belle Of The Nineties,' and the two appearances of the Ellington’s Orchestra in the legendary 'Cabin in the Sky.'
