Blending of musical styles has become commonplace for jazz musicians. It is rare that a listener finds a musician fluent enough in divergent idioms to arrange them in an attractive combination.
Trumpet player Claudio Roditti has been blending samba, the music of his native Brazil, and jazz for many years. He took his cues from his associations with some of jazz.s most notorious musical blenders, Dizzy Gillespie and Paquito D.Rivera. Roditi.s new CD, Impressions, finds him on a visit to Rio de Janeiro and his subsequent dialog with some of Brazil.s best musicians.
