This is a colossal improvised trio from Joe Morris that has been around for the past few years and continues to get better with each new release. For the first piece, Joe Morris sounds as if he is playing acoustic bass while the alto sax and drums swirl profusely around him, all three soaring together. Jim Hobbs leads the legendary Boston band, the Fully Celebrated Orchestra and is a monster saxist. Luther Gray has been playing with Mr. Morris for quite awhile and is also a most inventive drummer. Over the past half dozen years, Joe Morris has been switching to acoustic bass and sounds great no matter what he has in his hands. This trio means business and sails freely and fiercely in a whirlwind of activity. Joe bows up a storm at the start of "Lost in the Vastness of the Universe," which slows down to a sparse ballad-like piece. It reminds me "Song for Che" as Hobbs shows some of his Ornette influence and the trio moves into a more reflective, solemn vibe. "The Story of a Word" begins with odd drum groove with the drummer playing with his hands. It has a sort of twisted, mid-eastern funk groove and strong squealing and squawking sax. What I find most interesting about this disc is that it is not as "out" or "free" as what we may expect from Joe Morris and company. It does remain engaging, inventive and surprising in a number of other ways. Solid, Jackson! - BLG
