One of the most soulful sets so far from Steve Turre -- a record with a really great sense of groove, thanks to a tight rhythm section that includes Mulgrew Miller on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Ignacio Berroa on drums! There's a warmth and depth here that's totally great -- a sound that almost takes us back to a hip Prestige Records soul jazz set at the end of the 60s -- or some of the better Muse label work of the 70s -- a combination of well-crafted rhythms and freer-feeling solos that's totally great. Other players include Kenny Garrett on alto and Sean Jones on trumpet -- each of whom play on a few tracks -- and titles include "Groove Blues", "Brother Ray", "Rainbow People", "Forward Vision", "Search For Peace", and "Cleopatra's Needle". |
