Open Up Your Ears and Get Some

Artist: Sound Liberation
Label: Col Legno
Price: $16.95
Year: 2008
Format: CD

Quantity:

Sound Liberation sets out to liberate music from categories, ghettos, and ivory towers. In the words of founder gene Pritsker, the band’s motto is “to put an end to the splitting-up of sound vibrations,” which may also be understood to mean the decategorization of musical genres. On their second album, Pritsker & Co. rap, zap, hip, and hop through a variety of different musical styles and eras. Mozart encounters his clarinet quintet in a klezmer version, funk goes pop, soul meets the Bach cantatas, and Brahms’ symphonic sound is dissolved in jazz chamber music. Throughout the album, the band whose hip-hop opera Money has been praised from New York to Milan changes its shape as often as its style, appearing in variations ranging from quartet to the full dozen.
