 O Exílio is sensitively performed by a trio made up of João paulo on Hamburg Steinway, peter epstein on saxes, and Portuguese bassist Carlos Bica. Paulo composed all compositions except “Chama.” One could surely say that this is “New Portuguese Music,” with traditional Portuguese classical and jazz influences. Neither “bebop” nor “modern jazz,” this is a unique, stunningly refreshing approach to creative improvised music!
