The music on this recording is a combination of compositions and improvisations. The compositions are from a series of works for improvisers where the material for the scores came from plant material gathered from walks in my neighborhood and graphic elements I created to realize a specific set of musical concerns.
The scores are an ongoing attempt for the musical ideas and inspirations to be on the page rather than an abstract road map. They can be scaled from very open readings to quite specific interpretations and it is my hope that they contain enough interest and depth that they can be revisited and new meanings can be derived from them.
Each work has a unique set of sounds, strategies and ideas given to the visual elements. Some of the elements in the score are composer defined while others are what I call “self composing” where the musician decides on the material for the performance. The intent is to give shape and consistency of form for the ensemble while leaving open the path for individual language and perspective.
