| In jazz, the piano trio is the classic line-up with which one can continually test the borders of creative expression – and this is especially clear-cut with the recording at hand. Born in Aachen, Germany in 1962 and now living in Amsterdam, pianist Achim Kaufmann has assembled an outstanding trio especially for this production. The result is a piano trio music that is both highly complex and intensely sensual. It is music that goes its own way, venturing on paths not taken by Kaufmann’s earlier trios, and because of this it is virtually impossible to detect direct influences. The music jumps out at you with a driving energy, grabs you, unnerves you, and then pulls you into an enigmatic vortex. The picture of a vortex works especially well here, since the CD’s title comes from a natural phenomenon from which there was no escape: “Kyrill” is the name of a storm that swept over Europe on January 18, 2007. On that evening—as a wind strength measuring 10 on the Beaufort scale was recorded on the Dutch coast and the Dutch Home Secretary issued an urgent advisory against travel—Kaufman’s trio was booked on a flight from Amsterdam to Munich. The storm was uprooting trees, train and taxi service was suspended – but the musicians found someone who was willing to take them to the airport. The flight had not been cancelled. Miraculously it took place and was completed without the least bit of turbulence. This CD arose out of the impression of Kyrill’s natural violence. And even when individual pieces are most often concerned with other topics, one thing is immediately palpable: the music this trio plays is the opposite of harmless. It is music that is excitingly intense, expressive, and shimmering with kaleidoscopic complexity. Achim Kaufmann chose these two musical partners especially for this CD. Born in California in 1967, Jim Black is a musician whose experimental spirit was nurtured in the bands of trumpeter Dave Douglas and saxophonist Tim Berne. Kaufmann experienced Black’s playing some time ago in a concert of free improvisation with trombonist Wolter Wierbos and multi-instrumentalist Steve Beresford. Kaufmann was impressed, and asked Black to play in his own trio project. Achim Kaufmann had Jim Black’s sound ringing in the back of his head as he wrote compositions for this CD. The Icelandic bassist Valdi Kolli (whose name is actually Valdimar Sigurjónsson) is the third player in this coalition. Kolli studied in Reykjavik and in Amsterdam where he has been living since 2002. Along with jazz, he plays classical, pop, dance, and rock music, and has made music for films. Kaufmann has already played with Kolli, and praises “the ease with which he deals with complex material”. |
