The second recording by the new Roger Kellaway Trio following last year’s outstanding debut Remembering Bobby Darin. Heroes is a tribute to the piano/bass/guitar trios of the past, including those led by Art Tatum, Nat Cole and, particularly, the great Oscar Peterson trios from the fifties that featured Ray Brown on bass and Barney Kessel & Herb Ellis on guitar. Most of the tunes here were recorded by Peterson, and his “Hymn to Freedom” is given a memorable performance. The “drumless” trio is Kellaway’s regular performing group and this trio, like the Peterson trios of the fifties, swings really hard. Recently concluded a sold-out engagement at New York’s Jazz Standard.
“This music is truly a ‘piéce d’occasion’ and the occasion is now.”— EJAZZNEWS
“A thoroughly refreshing disc.” — JERSEY JAZZ
“Every track on this CD is a gem, but some are stunning. His complete mastery of the piano shines through everything he plays and makes his work absolutely timeless. He draws from all of his amazing breadth of experience to produce an album of superb quality, which is easy to listen to and at the same time very stimulating … in the future this CD is destined to become one of the definitive solo piano albums.” — MUSICWEB |
