| This seventy-minute composition was commissioned by the Naoshima Fukutake Art Museum Foundation as part of an exhibition based on the Japanese Island of the title, Naoshima. The version presented at the museum intermingled with incidental sounds from the surrounding island environment, something Sylvian acknowledged in this modified version released by Samadhi Sound. The ex-Japan singer later recorded sounds from the area and incorporated them into the final mix, with the intention of "creating an echo" of the composition's original setting. While the composition is entirely the work of Sylvian himself, he's recruited an impressive roster of artists to help out with the performance, including Christian Fennesz, Arve Henriksen, Akira Rabelais and Clive Bell. Musically there's a pervading air of minimalism to this piece, which is riddled with fissures, silences and seemingly accidental background sounds. Consequently, there's little sense of this as being a continuous piece of music, and so structurally it can all get quite disorientating, potentially obscuring your grasp on the passage of time. Fragmented phrases emerge - often inconspicuously - from the quietest moments, with recognisable outbursts from Arve Henriksen's peculiar trumpet-filtered voice and snippets of the ancient folk chants heard on Akira Rabelais' Spellewauerynsherde album, being especially distinctive constituents of an otherwise very challenging listen that commands your patience and full attention. Essential Purchase. |
