| The Holocene (or entirely new) epoch is the time period in which we are currently living, a period that Bob Dylan has called "the New Dark Ages." So say the enclosed liner notes to this disc. All thirteen song titles on this disc reflect this dark period, the post ice-age era that surrounds us, as things start to thaw. The music features a perfectly balanced trio of clarinets or alto sax, accordion and cello. Both Mr. Friedlander and Mr. Klucevsek were/are members of Dave Douglas' Charms of the Night Sky Trio. I wouldn't say that this music is necessarily dark, but it does fall between the cracks of categorization. On "Well On Our Way," time stops still as the accordion wheezes slowly, the stark clarinet hovers on the edge of the abyss and the cello is plucked and bowed gracefully yet minimally. Michael makes fragile, bird-like squeaks that speak directly without any obvious melodic content. On the very next song, the trio embraces a forlorn melody that is ever so quaint and rather romantic or perhaps old-fashioned. At times it is as if there are three ghosts that are creating a dialogue, with similar timbres. All three instruments seem to breathe together perfectly: the wood in the clarinet, cello and accordion, seems to give the trio a certain bond. The trio's combined sound ranges from elegant to solemn to poignant to eerie at times. This is a completely unique acoustic trio and one of this year's most luscious and tasty treasures. - BLG |
