From 1978 to 1984 Bennie Wallace’s idiosyncratic style impressed jazz fans on a yearly succession of albums for ENJA. In November 1999, he was a featured artist at the Berlin Jazz Festival, where he outblew everybody else. Carefully mastered by audiophile wizards Bernie Grundman and Joe Harley, In Berlin presents welcome remakes of three tunes from Wallace’s earlier Gershwin album, an irresistible arrangement of “It’s Only A Paper Moon,” and three additional titles that prove the original writing skills of this former Hollywood composer.
