During the first half of 1978, Stan Getz toured Europe with a sextet he co led with trombonist Bob Brookmeyer. The other band members consisted of Andy Laverne on piano, Mike Richmond on bass, Jeff Brillingen on drums, and Efrain Toro on percussion. Afterwards, Getz would continue playing in Europe with different formations that sometimes featured a similar rhythm section to the one employed with Brookmeyer plus other guest musicians like Chick Corea, who joined him on stage at the Bern Jazz Festival on April 27, 1978. By October 10 of that same year, Getz was in Sweden, where he was featured in a quartet format at different locations with a local rhythm section formed by pianist Lars Sjosten, bassist Georg Riedel Georg Riedel, although born in Czechoslovakia, lived in Sweden and drummer Rune Carlsson. A well known Swedish musician, Rune Carlsson had played with many American stars during their visits to Sweden, such as Eric Dolphy, Benny Bailey, Coleman Hawkins, Dexter Gordon, Bill Evans and Ben Webster. Georg Riedel also boasted an extensive resume, having played with American visitors Benny Bailey, Donald Byrd, Nat Adderley, Coleman Hawkins, and Getz himself, with whom he had recorded both live and in the studio during one of the saxophonist’s previous visits to Sweden in 1959. He also backed Swedish singer Monica Zetterlund on many occasions. Pianist Lars Sjösten played with Kenny Dorham, Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster and Brew Moore, among others. Both Riedel and Sjosten made many recordings with the celebrated Swedish baritone sax player Lars Gullin. |
