Live at the Amsterdam Paradiso, Amsterdam, Holland, February 5, 1969.
One of the very first bebop tenor saxophonists, Dexter Gordon began playing clarinet at the tender age of seven. By the time he was fifteen the precocious tenorist had already played in bands with Chico Hamilton and Buddy Collette. Gordon possessed a very distinct and profound sound. Some of the best-remembered moments of his superlative career were his tenor battles with fellow tenor saxophonist Wardell Gray from 1947 to 1952, and his leading role as an actor in the film Round Midnight in 1986, for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. By the time the Amsterdam Paradiso performance was taped, Dexter Gordon was an expatriate, living alternatively in Copenhagen and Paris for 15 years. (He was recorded in Copenhagen and Stockholm in 1969. He also made a short trip back to the States that same year, where he recorded two sessions in April with Barry Harris that would yield the material for the three albums Power, More Power and The Tower of Power.) However, life still wasn't easy in Europe for an expatriate with old drug charges. This release includes the complete contents of the 2-LP set Live at the Amsterdam Paradiso, issued in Holland soon after its recording date. |
