Aimard calls this a piano “portrait” of Messiaen - his modesty encapsulated in the early Préludes; his capacity for “marvelling” hinted at in the Catalogue d'Oiseaux; his intellectual curiosity in the Quatre Études de Rythme. It's a fleeting but complete picture, and Aimard is ever sensitive, ever erudite. Written following his mother's death, Messiaen's Préludes have a light, lyrical beauty. Cloches d'Angoisse, in particular, stands out, Aimard's selfless piano expressively working insistent grief before whispering gently into a lyrical dark mist of rising chords. The alarm calls of the midlife Catalogue d'Oiseaux carefully underline the dark, more aggressive tonality of the Études.
