| The two albums made by the great Eric Dolphy with Latin Jazz groups in their entirety. Although both albums were supposedly by the "Latin Jazz Quintet", the only constant in personnel is the presence of Dolphy, who plays alternatively on alto sax, flute and bass clarinet. As a bonus, we have added another tune with a Latin feeling featuring Eric Dolphy taken from a session with Max Roach as the leader. Includes 12 page booklet. This CD contains Eric Dolphy's only two real incursions into the world of Latin Jazz in their entirety. Even though some other isolated songs from his discography might have a certain Latin flavour – such as "Men from South Africa", from the Max Roach album Percussion Bitter Sweet, added here as a bonus – the two albums with the Latin Jazz Quintet were Dolphy's only works completely defined by this music style. The two albums were recorded by Dolphy with the Latin Jazz Quintet. However, while the group's name is the same on both albums, Dolphy is the only musician to play on both LPs! The repertoire combines jazz tunes that already had a Latin feeling – like Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia" – with original Latin tunes by the band's members, as well as Latin arrangements of well known jazz standards like "Spring is Here", "You Don't Know What Love Is" – the only tune in which Dolphy sits out –, "Lover", "Speak Low" and Gershwin's perennial favorite "I Got Rhythm". The results are interesting throughout, and Dolphy's playing often sets the mood. Whether playing the flute, the bass clarinet or the alto sax, Dolphy seems to have a different voice and different things to say on each instrument. |
