| 2-disc set. Though pianist Michel Petrucciani died in 1999, his legacy as a leader and accompanist (Joe Lovano, Charles Lloyd, Stephane Grappelli) continues to inspire. While he was not an innovator, his style was/remains a combination and summation of Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, and McCoy Tyner. Like them, he could always find newness in the most overplayed standard. This double-disc set finds him in a 1994 live duet setting with Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen (one of the finest bassists the European scene ever produced) at Denmark's Copenhagen Jazzhouse. Petrucciani plays brilliantly, of course, and Pedersen himself plays with not only amazing technique, but such presence that you'll never notice there's no drummer. |
