| Perhaps the reunion of so many great Detroit jazzmen (Pepper Adams, Tommy Flanagan, and Elvin Jones all having arrived in New York in the mid-Fifties, Ron Carter a few years later) made this session special. Then again, California native Zoot Sims had a habit of raising the standard on any recording where he appeared. In any event, Encounter! is a classic blowing date, with a blue-ribbon program (including compositions representing Debut-era Thad Jones, Prestige-period Flanagan, and two from Joe Henderson's Blue Note catalog) balanced between ferocious swinging and more reflective creation. On the latter score, note the calm probing on the Henderson tunes and one of Adams's definitive ballad solos on "I've Just Seen Her." Everyone had the gloves off here, and everyone scored a knockout. |
