| Vocalist Kevin Mahogany inherited the rich jazz and blues tradition of his Kansas City hometown, along with the great R&B of Detroit's Motown hit factory. Many of the sidemen on those legendary sessions were bona fide boppers, so it's not much of stretch to swing-out these timeless tunes. On this CD, Mahogany reconnects Motown with its jazz legacy, using his vibrant, deep-toned baritone and a rhythm section that includes the elegant pianist James Weidman, bassist Melissa Slocum, percussionist Don Alias, and guitarist Dave Stryker. Mahogany and crew extend and elaborate on these R&B chestnuts written by Holland-Dozier-Holland, Marvin Gaye, and Barrett Strong. Tunes such as Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" highlight Mahogany leading a scat-happy Take 6-type combo. "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game" (made famous by the Marvelettes) and the title track both swing with a Count Basie stroll. The Supremes' "My World Is Empty Without You" is slowed down to a spare and sexy Cuban clave beat.
