Listen NowAnd I Love Him
… Maurizio Rolli’s new album is an ambitious undertaking of tremendous logistical
and musical magnitude. International in scope, yet entirely personal and ITALIAN in
nature, it is a triumphant realization of dreams inspired by the musical vision,
passion and audacity of Maurizio’s hero, the late bassist and composer Jaco
Pastorius.

Following the success of the Maurizio Rolli & A.M.P. Big Band album “Moodswings ~
A Tribute to Jaco Pastorius,” Maurizio has been hard at work bringing his unique
brand of fusion to fruition. The result is “Rolli’s tones,” Maurizio’s tribute to some of
the classic songs of our time, a repertoire of music from the bands and pens of Jimi
Hendrix, Yes, the Beatles, Rush, Aerosmith, the Police and, yes, even Ozzy
Osbourne.

The generation of musicians like Jaco, including former colleagues Mike Stern,
Hiram Bullock (both of whom appear on this recording) and myself, grew up
listening to the sounds of big bands and bebop groups on record as well as to the
sounds of the 60s on the radio; the Beatles, Hendrix and Yes were as much a part
of our musical lexicon as Miles, Thad & Mel and Sinatra. Jaco synthesized these
influences and more in his epic solo recordings. Burt Bachrach figured as
prominently as J.S. Bach in Jaco’s musical milieu. Rolli continues this new tradition,
echoing Jaco’s varied interests but also making this project completely his own.
Signor Rolli has a vision of his own, and he has worked long and hard to make it a
reality.

…. I encourage you to take a journey through popular song on a highway of
genre-bending twists and turns. You’ll recognize the landscapes, but your ears will
delight to the combinations of sound and styles that bassist, bandleader, arranger
and producer Maurizio Rolli has rolled into this itinerary. This is good and clever stuff.

One landmark of note is the sole original composition by Maurizio that appears on
this album: “Impulse,” written in honor of Maurizio’s orchestration teacher, Alfredo
Impullitti, a brilliant composer who passed away in 2002 at the tender age of 34. I
can say that Maurizio’s mentor would have been pleased with and proud of this
piece.

On a personal note, I am also pleased and proud to be part of this musical
venture. (I play on the tunes “And I Love Her” along with Bob Sheppard, and
“Diary of a Madman” and “Mia”.) I have a lot of admiration for the human and
musical skills it took to bring all of this together. Persistence towards a musical goal
is always admirable; the successful completion of an album and realization of
one’s artistic vision is cause for celebration. Maurizio Rolli has taken his good time
to put together a most worthy album of music for our time. - Peter Erskine
