| The complete combo session plus the original soundtrack by Johnny Mandel made in 1958 for the film I Want to Live. The music features Gerry Mulligan along with other stars like Art Farmer, Bud Shank & Frank Rosolino, as well as Mandel's orchestra including such figures as Rosolino himself, Jack Sheldon & Joe Maini. Three small group songs from movie soundtrack of The Subterraneans featuring Mulligan, Sheldon and Art Pepper have been added as bonus tracks. This release contains the complete soundtrack recordings from the film I Want to Live, featuring Susan Hayward. The film contained a lot of wonderful music. The original orchestral score was composed by Johnny Mandel, as well as the six selections by a jazz combo. The small jazz band included such outstanding musicians as Gerry Mulligan, Bud Shank, Frank Rosolino, Pete Jolly, Art Farmer, Red Mitchell and Shelly Manne. The orchestra itself included Rosolino again, plus Jack Sheldon and Joe Maini, among many other important names. As a bonus, we have added three songs from the soundtrack of a later movie titled The Subterraneans, which was based on a novel by American writer Jack Kerouac 1922 1969. This release includes the only three instrumental numbers from the soundtrack, two featuring Mulligan and a final song featuring a combo with Jack Sheldon which for musical coherence were placed directly after the small band tracks from I Want to Live. |
