| Billy Harper is a Lone Star state heavyweight, a Texas tenor saxophonist with a massive tone and a fiery, cathartic approach descended from John Coltrane. Harper honed his abilities with Gil Evans, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, and Art Blakey, and BLUEPRINTS OF JAZZ displays what he learned in each of those contexts. While many of his tunes are of a wild-and-woolly nature, this set is not a free-for-all. Harper's exhilarating originals have structure and layers, as if his sextet were a big band, and they embrace many aspects of the jazz tradition, including swing, bebop, the blues, and Trane-era modality.JazzTimes (p.74) - "['Another Kind of Thoroughbred'] opens with gripping minor-key fanfare, played by Harper and Harrold in unison, whose urgency suggests everything depends on hearing it through -- and it delivers on that promise." |
