Featuring Mike Cooper on guitar, electronics & vocals, Leila Adu on piano, harmonica & vocals and Fabrizio Spera on drums & percussion. British-born guitarist and singer, Mike Cooper, has always taken his own path through songs and improvisations for more than forty years. Mike has been living in Rome quite a while and that is where this disc was recorded. For this disc Mike, Ms. Leila and Fabrizio (last seen in a trio with Lisle Ellis & Alberto Braida on NuBop), perform their own versions of blues standards from Robert Johnson, Skip James. Blind Boy Fuller, Son House and Bessie Smith, as well as some group improvs. What's interesting about this is the way they take these songs and send them to outer space. For Robert Johnson's "If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day", Mike's voice has an old, lived-in tone with some shimmering, simmering piano, acoustic piano and sly percussion. On Bessie Smith's "Long Old Road" Leila also sings splendidly like an old ghost with haunting slide acoustic guitar and eerie cymbal work. In some way I am reminded of Delaney & Bonnie who always did a fine job playing heartfelt versions of blues & gospel songs. The improvs are called "Abstract Blues Parts 1-5" and each has a sublime, free-floating and spacious vibe yet retains that special, hypnotic and haunting blues-like vibe. My favorite particular is "Hollers n' Drones" which has mesmerizing waves of disembodied vocals, strange clouds of fractured guitar and spinning drums. It feels as if we are standing in the middle of a hurricane as it bears down and starts to blows us away. This disc shows that there is another side to the blues that has yet to be explored fully. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG
