This is the second fine endeavor for The Other Quartet who feature our pal Russ Johnson on trumpet, Ohad Talmor on tenor sax & clarinet, the ubiquitous Pete McCann (Mahavishnu Project, Previte's Miles Big Band) on guitar and Mark Ferber on drums. The thing I dig most about the Other Quartet is that defy easy categorization, there is both some downtown/uptown or jazz/classical influences running through their tunes. "Bouncing Boontsy" opens with a hard swinging section, the horns sailing together, the guitar & drums rhythm team also kicking it down below - the center section slows down as tenor sax and trumpet play elegantly together, supported softly by the rhythm team once more - the last part speeds up in a flash once more and quickly ends. Russ' "Refraction" enters with some enchanting hushed solo electric guitar, which provides a somber cushion for some mysterious, trance-like clarinet and trumpet musings. "TOQ-TOQ" flies open with intricate horns and guitar playing complex lines together - well written and well-played, Pete using that dirty-edged fusion el. guitar tone so well and spinning quickly along with the tight horns and drums. "Memorial for the People of Turkey" was composed by Ludmila Ulehla and is a challenging piece which is episodic, often somber and moves a variety of haunting sections - none of which swing, but still tell an ongoing story that unfolds and evolves. Ohad's "Walking Leo" starts as a lush and dreamy ballad for warm trumpet, clarinet and delicate guitar, as the rhythm picks up Russ takes a superb impassioned trumpet solo and then Ohad also takes a fine, thoughtful clarinet solo. There is a short improv piece called "Romp" which is filled with a number spinning sparks and the odd granules of spice. Russ' "Chamber Piece No. 3" is another somber work for suspenseful tenor sax, probing el. guitar and trumpet interweaving with drums which are flailing one moment and then tight the next. "Cages on Cage" continues in a similar pensive direction, as Pete's evocative wah-wah and short noise guitar fragments follow the horns through more varied sections - quick and intricate in parts and then followed by freer segments and even rockin' hard in bits. Shoshtakovich's "Piano Concerto No. 2" might seem like an odd choice to cover, but the quartet do a fine job of breathing some quiet fire to this warm gem, the horns and guitar swirling their lovely lines around this lovely, warm beauty and Pete playing a precious, soothing guitar solo. " 'Nant Nana" has that wacky Masada-like abrupt start and stop type of structure with short blasts of noise guitar and odd horn insanity, while "Arriving with Every Step" concludes this cd with more hushed and elegant drifting horns and tasty guitar flourishes. - - Bruce Lee Gallanter of Downtown Music Gallery
