Featuring Julian Arguelles on tenor sax, recorders; Ronan Guilfoyle on acoustic bass guitar and Jim Black on drums. British born saxist, Julian Arguelles, has certainly gotten around and played in a number of important bands, working with Django Bates, later period Brotherhood of Breath, Carla Bley Big Band, Kenny Wheeler & John Taylor. Julian has a-half dozen discs as a leader, as well as playing for/with his brother drummer Steve Arguelles. I am not familiar with the bassist on this disc but everyone show know of that local sensation, the great Jim Black on drums. Most of the six pieces on this disc are long and includes covers by Ornette, Don Cherry and the standard, “I Wish I Knew.” Ornette’s mid-sixties classic, “Broadway Blues” is first and sounds different on tenor sax especially with Jim Black’s unique drumming. The trio eventually hit their stride when the play the theme and Julian takes a long, spirited solo. Julian’s only original tune, “FASA,” features him on two recorders at once with Jim using chains and metal objects on his drums, giving this piece a charming folky sort of sound. Don Cherry’s rarely heard “There is The Bomb” is next and it has some fine festive laid-back tenor from Julian. That old standard, “I Wish I Knew” is done as a most poignant ballad with skeletal percussion from Jim Black, exquisite bass and Julian’s marvelously touching tenor. The bassist, Ronan Guilfoyle, contributes a great, uptempo groove tune called “Tenski” with some truly spirited drums. The final piece is oddly enough called, “Grunge” and it is a hard rocking tune with smokin’ tenor and Jim Black’s thwacking drums! This is a fun-filled gem through and through.
