Their sound is eclectic; its members are equally at home performing Bach chorales, Angolan protest songs, avant-rock, afro-beat, Romanian brass band music, New Orleans “second line”, and be-bop or free jazz.
“In Between Stories” is the second release by The United Brassworkers Front, led by trumpeter/composer Darren Johnston. The UBF sound is eclectic - it’s members are equally at home performing Bach chorales, Angolan protest songs, avant-rock, afro-beat, Romanian brass band music, New Orleans “second line”, be-bop or free jazz. A “typical” UBF show is a celebration of contrasts. On this new release, the earlier eclecticism of the group’s first, and self-titled recording, has coalesced into a seasoned, distinctive UBF sound. The UBF have played in various San Francisco venues such as the Black Cat, Bruno’s, The Make-out Room, the Blue Room Gallery and Intersection for the Arts. In Oakland and Berkeley they have performed at the Jazzschool, the Jazz House, and the Oakland Box. They have performed live on both KFJC, and KPFA radio stations. In 2002, the UBF with members of San Francisco’s “post-rock” ensemble Tarentel performed an original score of Johnston’s live to the 1926 silent Russian film By The Law at the El Rio Film Festival. For a Cinco de Mayo show the following year, Johnston orchestrated a collaboration with the UBF plus accordion, two percussionists, and a laptop musician, featuring a piece for laptop and audience, as well as arrangements of traditional Mexican and Mexican-American songs. A forty minute piece for five brass and live sound processing (also on laptop), was written in 2004 and performed at Oakland’s Jazz House featuring Chris Brown on electronics, which led to Brown’s invitation to join the band on some tracks for this album. Also in 2004, the UBF performed at the ROVA Saxophone Quartet’s New Music on the Mountain series at the amphitheatre on Mount Tamalpais.
Since settling in San Francisco in 1997, Canada-born trumpeter Darren Johnston has built a web of alliances, from avant-guard excursions with the likes of Adam Lane’s Full Throttle Orchestra, and the ROVA saxophone quartet, to straight-ahead jazz outings with the likes of bassist Marcus Shelby. Another new release by Darren is Reasons For Moving, an all improvised recording on Not Two Records (Not Two 779), featuring Larry Ochs, Fred Frith, Devin Hoff, and Ches Smith.
Darren was recently listed in Down Beat magazine as one of "25 trumpeters for the future."
