October Meeting 1987 was a nine-day musical extravaganza of unsurpassed intensity. Some fifty American and European musicians participated in a day-and-night succession of uncommon, but self-explanatory musical encounters, focusing on the evaporation of geographical and stylistic boundaries. October Meeting 1987 was produced by the Dutch Jazz Foundation at Amsterdam's BIMHUIS, the home of the Foundation, and in 13 other venues in 12 cities in Holland.-From the liner notes
The first disc released from the 1987 festival contains five tracks from three bands. The first, Total Loss, is a tribute to Misha Mengelberg led by John Zorn with pianist Guus Janssen, bassist Mark Dresser and drummer Martin van Duynhoven. Janssen leads a quartet with the trombone trio of Johannes Bauer, Conrad Bauer and Wolter Wierbos and turntablist Christian Marclay plays a duo with saxophonist Louis Sclavis.
