Recorded in 1957, a young Coltrane joins Red Garland, Paul Chambers andArthur Taylor for an inspired showcasing of three Trane originals amida ballad by Alonzo Levister and a revved up version of Irving Berlin's'Soft Lights And Sweet Music.' Although Coltrane had only startedrecording a few years earlier, his style had already come into its ownand, particularly on his originals like the bonus track 'Slowtrane,' itis interesting to hear how Coltrane manages to break into and imposehimself on one of the tightest rhythm sections in jazz, givinglisteners a fleeting glimpse of what Trane had in store for the future.
