2-disc set.
Howard Riley has been making solo piano albums since 1972, and – as he points out on the sleeve of The Monk & Ellington Sessions – these two great American composers have always inspired him in this endeavour courtesy of their 'affirmation of the freedom of individual thought'.
The 33Jazz release comprises one CD already issued on Wondrous in 1993, plus a second recorded a year later, appearing for the first time on this solo album.
The NoBusiness recording documents a solo performance in Vilnius in September 2009, concentrating on Riley's own compositions but also including 'Round Midnight' and 'Misterioso' by Monk and the Kern/Harbach classic 'Yesterdays'.
The former double CD, setting as it does Riley's utterly distinctive playing in what to most listeners will be a relatively familiar context, might consequently be a good place to begin listening to him for those wishing to investigate his work, but who might be daunted by the sheer number (and apparent complexity) of his previous solo releases.
'Apparent' is an appropriate word here, because their superficial density conceals genuine approachability once Riley's methodology is recognised and appreciated, and for this reason (and to mark the importance of the release of two double albums by one of Europe's most unassumingly virtuosic, technically accomplished and original pianists), a 1989 interview, in which he discusses his work in detail, is reproduced elsewhere on the site. |
