Born in 1946 in Brooklyn, New York, David Liebman is a renaissance man in contemporary music. He has played with Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Abbey Lincoln, Lennie Tristano, John Scofield, Tom Harrell and many others and took part in more than 250 recordings. Liebman recorded as a leader in styles ranging from classical to rock to free jazz and has been performing worldwide for over thirty years. He also authored several books acknowledged as classics in the field of jazz and founded the International Association of Schools of Jazz. He has received an Honorary Doctorate and was a 1999 Grammy nominee for Best Jazz Solo.
A successor to Liebman's "The Loneliness Of A Long Distance Runner" (CMP 1986), "Time Immemorial" is a very special recording using four saxophone sizes within a loose, spontaneous context of sound and structure. Everything you hear has been played in some way on the saxophones (including finger nails scratching on a mouthpiece cap, fingering the pads without blowing, blowing a neck or a mouthpiece off the horn, etc.) and has in some cases been transformed by sound wizard Walter Quintus both electronically (reverbs, delays) and digitally (changing timbre or sound). Reflecting the four basic idioms Liebman has been working with over the years (ethnic, jazz, rock, and contemporary classical), the music on this CD represents a voyage through a sound landscape.

Says Liebman: "You note that engineer Walter Quintus is given co-artist credit here. It could not have been done without him. In all my recording experiences, I have never worked with a more artistic, honest and disciplined man. He is in the music - he trusts the artist and will do anything to bring about one's vision. Above all, it is the integrity he brings to the project. And the same can be said of producer Kurt Renker with whom I began recording in the late 1970s. I feel some of my best recordings come from Walter, Kurt and the studio in Zerkall. If it's art you want, without compromise and with a strong vision, there could be no place better."
