DJ, music critic, journalist, promoter and bandleading UK conguero Snowboy is back with a heavyweight hard-hitting tribute to Tito Puente, the King of Mambo! "Para Puente"! What more of a personal tribute can you pay someone than name your album after them? "Para Puente" is a way of acknowledging how much inspiration Tito Puente, the King of Mambo, gave and continues to give to Snowboy.
"There are no Puente 'covers' on this album, and other than my tribute song, "Puente", theres nothing that even sounds similar, but without him there would be no "us", and countless other bands besides. . .and through this album I thank him for his precious life and the legacy that he left us," Snowboy.
Merging Afro-Latin rhythms with modern jazz was Puente's groundbreaking signature sound, Snowboy with his band The Latin Section carries the torch on this, his 11th album and 3rd for Cubop. Their authentic Latin Jazz style wears influences from the masters of the genre but continues the quest to keep the music exciting and to keep the dancers dancing. This is not Latin jazz for the faint-hearted, this is ballsy, straight for the jugular, frenetic and funky Latin music.
"The Latin Section are a respectful, joyful conglomeration of Son, Salsa and Mambo which takes Afro Cuban music forward" - The Times "Snowboy is proof positive that Cuban Soul has truly gone worldwide" - San Francisco Weekly "Snowboy creates authentic rhythms that help to keep the genre alive" - Record Mirror "The band achieve an impact that's nothing short of amazing" - Rhythm Magazine.
Snowboy has been one of the main cornerstones of the British and European Latin Jazz scene for over 15 years with his powerful band simply called The Latin Section. The current line-up is comprised of the finest jazz and Latin musician's based in the U.K: Snowboy, Davide Giovaninni (who wrote and sings on "Barrago", and the tribute to two of the U.K.'s most notorious guys from the Jazz dance scene-"Rocky and Perry") alongside Nico Gomez, Ricardo Pla, Neil Angilley, Sid Gauld, Gary Plumley, and Paul Taylor. Guest appearances incude respected UK vibraphonist Roger Beaujolais and mini-moog keyboard a la vintage Chick Corea! |
