Joakim Frøystein, releases the CD “Sugarghost – Balls & Balloons” ILK, april 19th 2010. This is a follow up to his first solo-album “ILK111CD - Sugarghost – Sweet Secrets” which was nominated for Danish Music Awards in the categories “New Name of the Year” and “Best Crossover Jazz Release”, in 2006.
“Sugarghost – Balls & Balloons” is another strong album with a dynamic and powerful mix of electronica, songwriting and instrumentals with Frøysteins highly personal signature. The eight tracks on his second solo-release, reveal a variety of acoustic and electric instruments blending together with samples of lost and found sounds. Acoustic lap-steel, bass clarinet and drums interact on instrumentals, warped ambient textures and create backgrounds for vocaltracks.
Frøystein continues his approach of “high-tech meets fearless intuition in the electronic sphere, where tones pulverize and sounds are remelted.” His favourite sounds are found in objects that were not even made with the purpose of generating sound. Discarded spring feathers, old aluminum ash trays from his grandparents closed down gas station, bouncing balls on his guitar and fingers rubbing on balloons.
Some of it has a hint of club to it, as well as static minimal loops reminiscent of his friends Jan Jelinek and Pole, from Berlin label Scape~. Artists whith whom he was working during his years with “August Engkilde presents EPO”. Frøystein has shared festivalstages with artist like Rumpistol (DK), Fennesz (AT) and Mira Calix (ZA), and has been compared to names like Mathew Herbert (UK), Jaga Jazzist (NO), Mugison (IS) and Mouse on Mars (DE).
Additional musicians on ”Balls & Balloons” are Anders Banke on bass clarinet + flute & Emil de Waal on drums + electronics, who have both been part of the extended live act since 2006.
