One of Germany's most sought-after composers and a virtuoso clarinettist, Jörg Widmann has performed with major orchestras around the world with conductors including Christoph von Dohnányi, Sylvain Cambreling, Peter Eötvös, Christoph Eschenbach and Kent Nagano. Several clarinet concertos have been dedicated to and premiered by him. His oeuvre includes a large number of chamber music works, scenic works such as his first full-length opera Das Gesicht im Spiegel, and large-scale orchestral works. Leading orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker and Wiener Philharmoniker have commissioned works from him. At Opéra Bastille, Am Anfang (part installation, part opera) by Anselm Kiefer and Jörg Widmann, was premiered in July 2009. He has been invited as composer in residence with the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin, 2004 Salzburg Festival, Essen and Cologne Philharmonies, Vienna Konzerthaus, Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the Cleveland Orchestra.
