More mainstream than, for example, the Art Ensemble's 1969 landmark album, TUTANKHAMUN (one of the great albums in the free jazz repertoire), 1996's COMING HOME JAMAICA is grounded largely in the blues. On this outing, Roscoe Mitchell, Lester Bowie and company experiment with swing, reggae, and even calypso stylings. However, they still infuse elements of free jazz and atonality into their work.
This is most evident on pieces such as the introduction to "Mama Wants You," and on "Malachi," a song named after their longtime bass player Malachi Favors. On the latter, the band use space and dynamics to creatively blend free-form passages with arranged sections, one of the Art Ensemble's endearing trademarks. On "Strawberry Mango" they employ a steady reggae feel, and, in another Art Ensemble tradition, use sound effect instruments such as bicycle horns and Chinese gongs to add color and eccentricity to this composition. The most riveting tune on COME HOME JAMAICA, however, is "Villa Tiamo," a lush and introspective balled featuring trumpeter Lester Bowie on top form.
Recorded at Kariang Studios, Ocho Rios, Jamaica and Studio De Preference, Wissous, France between December 27, 1995 & January 2, 2002.
