Charles Sullivan's fine tone and shimmering sound lend this 1976 recording an edge which is unmistakable. Joined here by an outstanding rhythm comprising Kenny Barron on Piano, Buster Williams on bass and Billy Hart on drums as well as the fluent Rene McLean on Saxes the unit come together in a way that only such seasoned musicians can - feeling the music with every ounce of themselves. Comprising mainly original tracks by Sullivan this CD is made all the more special by the fact that although his touring CV was varied and extensive, recordings of Sullivan as a band leader such as this are unfortunately rare. One of twenty recordings in the Why Not series this is the first time this album has been made available in the West. The Why Not recordings were lovingly gathered by Yuh over a period of months and as a result provide a valuable snap shot of the Jazz scene in America during the 1970s, a time when the Avant Garde scene was blooming. This is an opportunity to discover a rare jazz gem for the first time in over 30 years.
