Recorded in 1959 and originally released on Atlantic Records in January, 1960, GIANT STEPS was jazz legend and saxophone master John Coltrane's first album dedicated entirely to his own compositions. A landmark album that is considered his finest and most influential work, GIANT STEPS revolutionized jazz and established Coltrane as one of its most important artists. Rhino's new numbered, limited run, two-disc DELUXE EDITION was pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI and mastered at 45 RPM by Bernie Grundman Mastering. This collectible set comes handsomely packaged in a slipcase that visually replicates the original tape box.
Stellar on tenor sax, Coltrane is accompanied by Tommy Flanagan (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), Art Taylor (drums), and on “Naima,” Wynton Kelly (piano) and Jimmy Cobb (drums). Other 'Trane-penned stand-outs include “Cousin Mary,” “Countdown” and the title track.
In addition to being a genre-defining masterpiece of the jazz canon, GIANT STEPS was named one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time by Rolling Stone, which noted that Coltrane, “played with a heated melodic enthusiasm-flying clusters of notes-that declared new possibilities for jazz improvisation.”
