When given a superficial first listening some people might mistake this music for New Age. The sound is luxuriant, it is played extremely well, and notes float pleasantly around in your head… But the luxuriant sound is not the end goal. This music has edge, vitality and virtuosity and is played by three very special musicians, each a master on his particular instrument.

Mikkel Nordsø is one of Denmark’s most famous guitarists. He established Mikkel Nordsø Band in 1985, while simultaneously perfecting his original style on the acoustic guitar in Acoustic Guitars and Bombay Hotel. Tine Rehling is one of Scandinavia’s few full-time solo and chamber harpists. Ole Theill is a versatile and imaginative drummer and a unique tabla-player with three albums in his own name. An unusual trio, in an exciting combination of sounds from tablas, harp and acoustic guitar, inspired by their respective experiences with the music of South America and India and the classical chamber repertoire and – naturally – Scandinavia.

Tine Rehling and Mikkel Nordsø – who are cousins – have played together for ten years in Thomas Clausen’s “Brazilian Quartet” and in “Time Wave”. Six years ago they began a duo collaboration, which has intensified over the last three years resulting in the release of their first CD together in 2008. They perform regularly all over Denmark and have played in Italy, Switzerland and Brazil. In 2009 their duo grew into a trio with the addition of Mikkel’s musical collaborator for 30 years, Ole Theill.

The trio’s unique live performances have taken them far from home. In May the trio visited Brazil, where they drew large crowds at the Rio International Harp Festival. Their final festival concert sold out in no time. The many fans that weren’t able to secure a ticket may be consoled by the fact that the concert was recorded by Brazil’s national television network to be transmitted later this summer - and the trio has already been booked for next year’s festival. An excerpt from a concert review in the monthly “Musikeren”, conveys what one of the trio’s live performance has to offer:

“Each is a creative and virtuosic musician, and the musical textures are deep and image-evoking when Ole Theill’s Indian tablas, Tine Rehling’s harp and Mikkel Nordsø’s guitar convene. …The musicians master their instruments and musical idioms. They recognize the power of music and take full responsibility for the music they create. And visually the trio is equally pleasurable. Fleeting glances and smiles dart back and forth in the course of their internal musical discussion, but otherwise their energy is directed outward towards the audience. A contagious musical joy flows from the stage. All the audience has to do is follow.”

All that’s left to say is that a similar experience is saved for posterity on this well-produced studio recording featuring a selection of original material. Lovely themes deconstructed and re-created in improvised passages - well-known tunes from the repertoires of Acoustic Guitars and Bombay Hotel and new original composi-tions written especially with this trio in mind.
