Love for Sale is an early Cecil Taylor studio album recorded in 1959, which presents Cecil in a period of transition. Side A consists of three Cole Porter tunes with a trio that includes Buell Neidlinger (bass) and Rudy Collins (drums) [the drummer is mentioned as Denis Charles by some sources]. Although Cecil was still deeply rooted in the post-bop tradition at this point of his career, he deconstructs the three standards with characteristic dissonant chords and free explorations well beyond the melody. However, he does actually play the melody and hadn't yet taken off into the maniacally fast, structured chaos that would become his signature style after the ‘70s. Side B contains two Taylor originals (a third composition by Taylor which completes the session has been added here as a bonus), with the same trio plus the addition of Ted Curson (trumpet) [mentioned as Ted Curzon on the original LP back cover] and Bill Barron (tenor sax). Despite performing original Taylor compositions, the horns play fairly restrained choruses and solos that again keep the music (and Cecil as accompanist) rooted in melody, hard bop, and tradition.
