Standard Coltrane showcases the saxophonist at the onset of his career asa leader. It was recorded while he was still working as a sideman with MilesDavis in a sextet that included Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans (thisgroup would record the celebrated album Kind of Blue the following year). The quintet on Standard Coltrane features flugelhorn player Wilbur Harden(mentioned as Wilbur Hardin on the original back cover), plus the rhythmsection from Miles Davis’ quintet, which was composed of pianist RedGarland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb. As the titleindicates, the material for the LP consists mostly of well-known standards, and no original compositions by Coltrane are heard here. The July 11, 1958session was quite long, and some of the material produced that day wouldalso appear later on the albums Stardust and Bahia. This session markedColtrane’s final date with Harden. They had previously collaborated onthree 1958 sessions for the Savoy label, which were issued on the albumsMainstream 1958, Tanganyika Strut, and Jazz Way Out. As the originalliner notes clearly state, the material on Standard Coltrane was put on theshelf at the time of the session and issued later, when Coltrane was alreadyan established leader.
John Coltrane (tenor sax); Wilbur Harden (flugelhorn); Red Garland (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Jimmy Cobb (drums)
